Hi all. A lad at work is looking at treating himself to an RSV4. I'm a gen 1 rsv owner myself and have seen the occasional comments re problems or week points on some early model Rsv4 models but I'm not sure what problems if any are worth checking for in particular. Any pointers I can pass on would be greatly appreciated especially if certain years etc are worse than others. Cheers in advance.

Pmsl. I saw something somewhere about cam wear or failures wearing away followers etc. I don't think he's set on colour or specific model type yet. He's more scared of what to watch out for. I'm sure I've seen posts re charge problems too. Is that just another aprilia thing or any specific years to avoid etc.

Pre APRC (09-11) have a tendency too loose valve clearance as the valve seat gets hammered back into cylinder head.
I would say go for APRC model (11-14 )and budget to get valve clearance service done early if not done already just for piece of mind I've heard of a few rectifier failures butt not many(looks the same as the gen2 one so no wonder lol) |

No major horror stories really.
Early bikes could suffer low oil pressure to the top end on hot startup which was partly fixed (minimal improvement) by Aprilia fitting a different ratio oil pump gear to make the pump spin faster. Several mods have been fitted to cam followers in an attempt to get them to hold pressure or be quieter with very limited success. Cam chain wear can be an issue on higher mileage/track bikes as can gearbox failures. Stator failures are quite common, as much as the Gen2 really. The Aprc model has modified oil delivery and a much thicker cam chain. still a noisy top end when hot (not fixed until this years model) but generally a more robust motor when the miles get higher. As Warnz said valve regression is an issue. DON'T follow the service schedule for valve checks especially the first one as many bikes even leave the factory with the clearances wrong and if they go unchecked for long enough you will suffer top end damage. Dropped valves are not unknown especially on the models without the TI Valves. They usually snap 20mm up the stem from the head when they go. As with any Aprilia, servicing is key. If it's never seen new oil or valve checks etc, walk away. It's not like there aren't plenty to choose from. |
