Ok folks I have it official. As it is well documented Ethanol eats our plastic tanks and makes them swell.
I email Esso yesterday asking about their Ethanol content in fuel. I got the following response 😉

Dear Mr. Adams,

Thank you for contacting Esso Customer Care.

The majority of unleaded 95 Octane petrol sold in the UK contains 5% ethanol as required under the Government’s Renewable Transport Fuels Obligation (RTFO).

There is currently no requirement for renewable fuel (such as ethanol) to be present in super unleaded (97 grade petrol).

Esso super unleaded petrol (Synergy Supreme+ Unleaded 97) is ethanol free (except in Devon, Cornwall, the Teesside area and Scotland) and we have no current intention to add ethanol to Synergy Supreme+ in other areas of the UK.

We would therefore advise anyone who has concerns about the presence of ethanol in petrol to use Synergy Supreme+ – providing they do not fill up in Devon or Cornwall, the Teesside area or Scotland.

Yours sincerely,

Daniel Jankovits

Very handy to know. I'm now wondering if it will absorb the ethanol already absorbed by the tank and therefore reverse the swelling.
If its not broken then fix it until it is

Top information and my local garage is esso which I use 95% of the time and only super Unleaded. I've never had any swelling on either of my apes in 6/7 years ownership I doubt it is coincidence.
I started out with nothing and I've still got most of it left

Great news if you don't live in Devon! ah well swings and roundabouts, still wouldn't want to live anywhere else even if we are overrun with idiotic grockles every summer

I asked Tesco about their Momentum 99 fuel and a very nice lady phoned me today to say that it contains 9% ethanol. I can't imagine me stopping off to fill my Aprilia Tuono Gen 1 with that stuff any time soon.

Also waiting to hear from Shell about V-Power Nitro+ unleaded, which I have been using until now. I may have to switch to BP or Esso if they confirm the 5% ethanol. Their data sheet shows 0%-5% so it may vary by area.

Same response from BP too.Same areas affected too.
Those of you that can't get it , LUCAS ETHANOL fuel stabalizer from A.J Sutton @ £7 a bottle.
Does loads of fill ups . Couple of cap fulls and Bobs yer uncle. Used that for ages untill i found out about BP.
I used to be uncertain , but now i'm not sure anymore

Bugger, just filled the RSV up with Tesco Momentum 99 and was going to pretty much leave it until Spring like that.

Will it do the tank any harm standing over Winter with a full tank bearing in mind that the bike is 13 years old, I'm the seventh owner and in reality the tank is probably already swollen?

Thinking I should syphon the fuel out and leave it empty instead....

At the very least put some fuel stabilizer in the petrol and run it so it gets into the injectors.
Today's fuel goes off quickly; at least the fuel stab will keep it fresh over winter.

Modern fuel is roughly good for about 3 months, it will work after that but starts to leave deposits so for me I would rather drain it and leave it empty.

I've always used fuel stab in my Honda CB1300 over winter as it's fuel injected and it's always started first prod in the Spring; but I've also always drained the Guzzi Le Mans tank and carbs.
This is my first winter lay up with the Aprilia and I think I'll go with the fuel stab.
As for leaving deposits, that's one thing that the fuel stab prevents.

I've had confirmation from Shell today that their super unleaded grade contains 5% ethanol.

So it'll be Esso super unleaded only for the RSV from now on, one station is ~3 miles away and the other ~8 miles away.

Well that's a first,at least they admit it contains the stuff.

There was always uncertainty before, now we know without doubt.

BP have told me today that they can't guarantee that there is no ethanol in their super unleaded grade.

Esso are the only ones I've had 100% assurance off that their super unleaded grade has no ethanol in.

Are you using 98 ron synergy ?
The standard 95 sh*t is up to 10% ethanol....or you live in the west Country or swettie land....

I don't tend to worry about the swelling as near me if I fill up with super unleaded great but when I am in the sticks you have to use whatever grade of fuel you can find which quite often is standard 95ron.

So why do those areas mentioned, have to have ethanol in their supply, are they just not ready for ethanol-free fuel yet, or do Esso monitor where placky-taked Aprilias are being used. Its bizarre that its not country-wide, so typically UK - logic driven.

It's based on renewable energy grants. To get the grants you have to commit to hitting renewable energy targets. Hence those regions tend to have loads of wind turbines etc as well.
