After spending an hour shouting at it I come to you all for help. What is the trick to getting the top bolt back in place for the rear shock? I am finding the undertray above it is preventing the head of the bolt getting into its required place.

yes it's a pig alright if it's still the Allen bolt put it on an extension bar offer it up and at the same time push a screw driver between the bolt and the under tray and lever it up a bit it should slip right in that's the way I do it

I've also had success with pushing up from below with an open ended spanner of appropriate size while pushing in with the allen key. Last time I think I tapped it in gently with a flat head screwdriver inside the top side of the allen bolt using a small hammer. If there's an official technique I don't know it.

Apparently it was designed like that as a safety feature to prevent it popping all the way off in the event of the nut coming undone. It's a right pain in the arse and the first thing I think of when I need to remove the shock off to work on it. Tempted to trim the undertray next time..

Ugh stuck doing this again. Makes me dread ever taking the shock off the bike.

The Haynes manual doesn't have the undertray in the pictures which makes me wonder whether it was added for the 2003 model. Maybe on bikes with plastic tanks.

Does anyone have a picture of their bike without one of these undertrays? Wondering if it's a useless addition that can be removed or whether the design changed leaving this as the only thing protecting the battery etc.
