Just had a mad natter with my wife about her love of cleaning and how if she wanted she could clean the chain on my bike. Anyway, she reckons that in this day and age of efficient energy transference and computer gadgetry etc we should've come up with something cleaner and more efficient than an oily old chain to get the power from the engine to the back wheel. I explained about shaft drive and even the type of direct drive you get on some scooters but she still reckons that a chain on a bike is like buying a pair of jimmy choo (whoever the fk he is) shoes and putting Morrisons laces in them. So, thoughts and ideas please.

There are probably several different ways of doing it differently - fluid transfer, electrical, etc. - but it all comes down to cost and whether we'd buy it.
Even BMW on the most technologically advanced bike ever built, still use a chain. Which tells you something.

Been on a shaft drive bmw hp2 horrible ,... you try to use the gears as a brake like on a chain drive , bloody shaft ships and jumps around.

Chain drive is still the most efficient and least power losing drive between engine and wheel. Thats why they still use them in racing. On shaft drives about 15 percent of power is lost in the changes of direction. They are a pain in the arse but they are the best we have got at the moment. Also scottoilers are quite good.

belt drives have come on in leaps and bounds. Not sure if they'll ever be quite as reliable as a chain though.

Problem with belt drives is they do stretch, yes chains stretch to but you get away with it because when the chain climbs the tooth it re tensions its self, belts on the other hand dont need much slack before they jump, look at car cam drives over the past few years, more and more manufactures are going over to chain driven cams, they must know something, gears would be the next step in efficient drives but you'll have to fit a sh*t load into the swing arm to transfer the power

The best continuous brake is gears in oil. Check the (non-) economy on those sh*t 4X4's. They have a gearbox and (if it's a real 4X4) three differentials.
No, chains rule. I love the wining noise they sometimes make.

All the gears are in motion when not in four wheel drive, by the way?

Got a mitsubishi outlander at work and went to gloucester in it today averaged between 80,85 mph and fuel averaged 40,44mpg not bad for a 4x4.
