    Posted: 12 Jul 2011 at 10:46
So on my recent trip to France, my sidestand has somehow bent!!!!! It looks like a banana now, and the bike is at a horrible angle and the stand looks like it might snap at any time Dead Not sure how it happened but it's happened :)

I have done some research and seen some mods you can do to other side stands to fit the Falco, but does anyone know if the Mille sidestand (from earlier models) would fit? From looking at a few pictures, it seems the 99 model is exactly the same stand as what is on my bike.

Don't want to buy one if it doesn't fit obviously, and also don't want to do any mods really as I don't have many tools handy!

Thanks in advance!

If you look on the Rsv section griff mentions a Honda stand that bolts straight on. The mille stand will likely fit but they are not very stable at the best of times. If you have to change get one that is safer.

Does the Honda stand require any drilling etc? I read a bit about drilling to make holes bigger and fit the sensor on and stuff?

I have just taken the stand off, left the mount on. Is it a straight out swap for the actual leg and it fits the mount?

Will try and get a pic up :)

Ok .. just bit the bullet and bought this .. hope it fits!

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=260816709893

The stand looks a little longer (judging by the spring mount and kick bit), and I read that the kick stand is a bit of a pain to get to under the exhaust, but hopefully it's somewhat accessible.

Fingers crossed .. and thanks for your reply.

For £25 I think I'll put my original falco one on ebay!

Mine wasn't bent but got fed up with constantly worrying about the bike falling over.  Used a GSXR750 stand leg (not sure of year) on the aprilia mount bracket.

Result is far more stable:

Does require a little bit of welding to move a boss from the left to the right but apart from that it's a direct swap.  Let me know if you need any more details.

:O Fair difference in length! Will wait and see what turns up in the post.

I'll buy your old one otherwise bomber!!!!

Edit - Looking at your pics and mine, my stand is just munted. The bottom is shagged, the "kick down bit" is bent down at a strange angle too!

Until mine bent, I never thought the bike was going to fall over. Maybe it's because my rear isn't jacked up or has the original shock?

Right .. the Mille stand arrived, fitted, all good. BUT the bike is ridiculously upright. Guess I never had this problem with a bent stand eh :)

When people complain about the original stand, and fear of the bike falling over, do they mean falling over AWAY from the stand because it's too upright, or onto the stand side because the lean is too great?

Happy to at least have a stand that doesn't look like it's going to snap at any minute!

Depends on the year/model.

The earlier bikes were too upright and woul fall over in a breeze or ig you got a rear puncture. Post 04 rsv's went the other way.

Didn't realise the stands changed.  Mine is a 2000 model and on the old stand it was near enough vertical which meant it could fall away from the stand.  Also the stand 'foot' was only about 4" out of the tyre centre line so if you managed to find a slope to park on it then felt like it would fall the other way!!  Too many sleepless nights - hence the GSXR stand!

Clearly Aprilia thought you should carry a paddock stand with you..........Clap

Ahhh .. makes sense to me now. Since my original was, well original, it never really had this problem (maybe it was slightly bent and I never noticed before until it was a banana), but now this one is on and straight, I can certainly see the problem!

I was thinking I could find a slope to compensate, but I think you are onto something with that as well bomber, too close in to the bike! Arghhhhh

Might have to go for the GSXR stand then. Judging by your photos bomber, it's a straight swap of the leg itself onto the Aprilia mount? Any drilling required or tapping for the bolt "assembly" that the Aprilia one uses?

The GSXR one does require a bit of welding.  If you havn't  got any kit or you havn't got a stand yet I'd probably look for the blade one as Griff seems to think it'll be a straight swap.

For the GSXR route:

Stand mounting bracket: Original Aprilia one with about 2mm of weld "blob" to limit how far up the stand can go so that it misses the exhaust.

Mount bolt: Original Aprilia one so that the standard switch can be retained.

Springs: Aprilia ones - I think.... ?

Stand: GSXR.  I can't remember if the theaded part of the fork is the wrong way round or if Suzuki just relied on a nut instead.  Whichever, you'll have to machine a boss and weld it into the inside side of the stand.  You can just see the insert on the next photo before it's welded.

Hope it helps

Thanks .. that rules that out for me then! No welding available (skills or equipment :P)

I might try the Blade route .. if I can find the thread you keep referring to ;)

Thanks again!

I haven't properly investigated it yet, but I think there's a good chance the Blackbird stand would also fit. I have the GSXR stand and fitted it without welding anything, I drilled out the hole in the mounting bracket to 14mm for the Suzuki pivot bolt to fit through. Then cut the bolt and nut down to the correct length take the switch, drilled and tapped a hole in the centre of the threaded end of the pivot bolt for the switch bolt and drilled a hole in the stand to take the tab of the switch.

Another possibility is the VFR800 stand (could well be the same one used on the 'Blade and Blackbird). Again, I haven't tried it personally, but a cursory glance suggests it way well also fit.

The Honda Firestorm  side stand is a direct replacement .Use the Aprilia Bracket and one small hole has to be drilled in the Honda part for the Aprilia switch tab or use the Honda switch (No Drilling).
Leans the bike over more .

So when you say "move the boss", do you mean the switch actuating disc from the Aprilia to the Suzuki stand or do you mean modify the fork end to enable use of the Aprilia pivot bolt (or both)

Just for inf, I have just swapped my sidestand for the Blackbird unit, much easier than the GSXR option, had it done in 15 mins, in fact it would have bolted straight on had the Blackbird fixing bracket not been a couple of mill out on the upper edge (a "V" needs grinding) the whole thing would have gone straight on as it was.
I opted to keep the Aprilia bracket, swapped it over job done. Even the switch goes straight back on without faffing.
