I've just burned through another tyre, and currently I'm using 180/50 because they supposedly turn in quicker. But my last tyre I wore the side off. Plus I've had some instability issues at speed. Anyone using the 190/xx options?
What are the plusses and minuses of going up a width size?

Hi
Either a 180/55 0r a 190/55 would be my options. Width doesn't really matter it's the profile height that gives you the quicker turn in. You could consider a 60 profile tyre but you may need to lengthen the chain to stop it fouling on the swingarm. A 180 width used to be recommended over the 190 not because of the width but because a 180 was a 55 profile and the 190 was a 50 profile. As they both can have the 55 profile it doesn't matter So no minus of switching to a 190 imo just pluses. A 55 profile will be the missing link for you

They do handle slightly differently. The carcass of a 180 is a bit lighter and it does turn quite a bit quicker. The profile is a ratio of height to width so a 180/55 has to loose the same height in 10mm less width. The 190 is deffo the more stable and the bike feels more settled, just a bit more physical to change direction. I don’t dislike either so it often comes down to what’s well priced at the time for me.

I'd avoid the 190/50, it's too flat, not enough curve at the edge. I'm using a 190/55, costs the most out of the 3 (inc the 180/55), but I like the increased contact patch, good profile (depending on brand/model). I'm 6'3, 110kg, so the slight increase in weight, more physicality to move the bike around doesn't concern me at all, and if anything, makes it less twitchy

It's my preference to use a 190/55 I believe the only reason Aprilia originally fitted the 180/55 was the 190 was only made as a 50 profile at the time and was slower to tip in I expect had the 190/55 been available they would have chosen that. Obviously I'm thinking early Gen1 here. I've not tried a 60 profile rear and for the kind of riding I do I think it would just flatten quicker, track use I can see only benefits though. Horses for courses,I'd advocate Sport Touring as the sportiest needed,Roads preferred if you ride all year round in our crappy weather. Never seen the point of using track biased kit like SC's on the road unless you also track and don't have spare wheels. |

Your about right Ian. No 55 fitment 190 originally and very early wheels were a 5.5 inch rim so couldn’t take it anyway. I think by about 2006 the standard fitment was 190/55 from the factory.

Ive run the 180/55 190/50 and the 190/55.
In my opinion the 180/55 is the best.
