Ok

So maybe an odd question but one that's gone through my brain.

Which way do you put your rear wheel spindle through the swingarm? So both the front and rear wheel nuts are on the same side? Or opposite so it's easier to get the caliper support bracket on the spindle?

Neither is wrong from what I can tell and even Aprilia themselves vary in their publicity pictures.

I do it one way on the road bike and the opposite in the race bike.

Yes that's exactly how I do it normally.

It just occurred to me that I sometimes have to mess about getting the caliper support bracket in place and doing it the other way is easier.

Had a look at Aprilia pics and it totally varies bike to bike.

I do it with the nut on the caliper side because tightening it tend to push against the adjuster. Conventions dictate nut on the chain side.

Mine has always had the spindle inserted from LH side with nut on RH side. That's how it shows in the manual too:

That's very strange that the Tuono and Mille manual show opposite assembly. It would be interesting to know why this is the case, there has to be a reason as I can't believe they would do it just to be different or for fun!

I suppose it could just be something as easy as for making a clearer paper reproduction, but I doubt it.

That's why I was so surprised they were different as I assumed they would use a common format and just change any part nos if they needed to.

I seem to recall my SV1000s also came with the spindle inserted from the caliper side,I changed it round after the first time I removed the wheel as I found it did keep the sliding block in contact with the head of the adjuster on tightening, unlike the factory way which I found could drag the block away

I suppose it could come down to speed of final assembly at the factory, who knows Confused

That parts fishe is wrong.
The TuonoR axle goes in on the chain side, with the nut on the caliper side.
Exactly the same as the RSV's etc..

I've noticed that plenty of bikes have it on the 'wrong' side so the nut on the sprocket side. Plenty of official Aprilia release pictures and original tests have it either way. So even they didn't know themselves. There's pros and cons for fitting either way as far as I can tell.

Ha, I don't really think there is a right and wrong way, it probably depends on what the tec doing the PDI decides.
Tifa has had a Tuono longer than me and recently gifted me what he had  left after the sale of his bike and for that I thank him again.

The up side of having the nut on the chain side is, when you are changing your wheel,
the brake caliper bracket can still hang on the end of the axle when you slide the axle back.
Makes changing the tire easier.

One of the problems with owning an obsolete bike I suppose, there are very few questions left to be asked.

New people buy old bikes and pop up asking all the old questions that were debated to death years ago by the previous owners Sleepy

Unfortunately the search feature on most forums leaves much to be desired so ...........

The only thought I had was the direction of fastening the nut re rotation of the wheel a la the old knock off wheel nuts on old cars. Of course the spindle isn't turning - or shouldn't be!

Possibly more relevant though, the action of torquing up the nut caliper side will influence the spindle against the adjuster, chain side it will tend to pull it away?
