Hi folks - I am proud owner of RSVR Gen 1 and I am instantly in love with it. Its not a young bike though, and despite being very well cared for (based on appearances) it has done 29,000 miles. I would like to know what particular things are worth being aware of so that I can keep it running sweet. Are there certain things I can be checking now that might need replacing/upgrading? Any well known niggles that I can nip in the bud (or reassure myself have already been sorted by the previous owner!?).

you could start by checking the rear linkage that sometimes gets neglected

The 2 things that always spring to mind are the electrics and sidestand.

People go chasing performance etc, but if your bike won't start and falls over, it kind of spoils things.

If not already done...

Electrics: Heavy duty cable kit (starter and battery cables from John Walker), 150 amp  starter solenoid and bigger battery TTZ14s. Never worry about starting again.

Sidestand: Fireblade 04-07, or if you can find a US spec Aprilia stand, they are the best.

+1 on the rear suspension linkage. The bearings should be checked every year really and repacked with grease if needed.

Get the suspension set up for you.

Common mods are the collector from Mark (Redrat Bike), open airbox/exhaust, early big air boot and Forza/Gabro chip.
Question everything.

29K...I'd give the valve clearances a check.
Unless you have service history to prove recent fluid changes, oil, filter and coolant change too.
You can only really check the state of the rear linkage by stripping it, at the very least it's probably due a re grease.
How deep do you want to go? I'd also whip the swing arm off and check / re grease the bearings; this mainly because my Gen 1 T is lower mileage than yours and my bearings on the left side were not well greased and I just caught them in time.
That'll keep you going for a while Wink

dont buy a cheap solenoid ring AP for them electrical stuff diablo mentioned

Worth replacing the fork oil as well I'd think? Suspension usually doesn't feature highly in routine maintenance for many bikers :)

i 2nd and 3rd the stand.
i couldn't really start enjoying the bike until i got one from the US, was about £100 all in shipped, but the stock stand is a nightmare so it was well worth it.
what everyone has mentioned is bang on, especially diablo, invest in a good battery and starter solenoid mine starts 3-4 weeks of sitting in a cold garage no problem, the 1199s is stone dead.

not a bike worth chasing BHP in my opinion as its costly and you can get a 2009 R1 for 5k.

Thanks for these replies gents...sorry for the delay. I’ll try and sort some photos out soon. I may even locate the previous owner on here if he recognises the bike?! 

Would you recommend the US stand over the blade option? Is the blade option not favoured mainly due to the fact a hole needs to be drilled? I’d love to see a how too on that. Taking a drill to my new bike makes me feel sick. 

As for the battery and solenoid I’ll get straight on that. Is AR the best place to source these or are there alternative places where can get decent quality upgrades? 

I’ve also just read some horror stories about the sprag clutch. I don’t even know what that is, but apparently it’s an expensive pain in the arse if it goes wrong!

Questions questions!

Hi there. As others have said the USA spec is the one but pretty much any other stand is better than the rs125 item fitted to UK apes. Aprilia performance is the go-to place for most stuff if they haven't got it they will order it in and price wise there's little in it compared with Fowlers or others. 

If you try and start the bike with a weak battery you will knacker the sprag DON'T DO IT! 
I started out with nothing and I've still got most of it left

Thank you all for further comments. I’ll get on to AP for the new bits. 

Is the solenoid and the leads a reasonable simple job? I’m sure I can swap out a battery and side stand, but not so sure about the other bits. I’m keen to try though.

As others have said, try and find a US spec stand if possible. It's the proper job, needs no mods, uses the original stand switch and just works as it should. And because it's OE you won't shouldn't have any issues with insurance if you ever need to claim

I know you have a Gen 1 but if anyone is looking i saw a US spec Gen2 stand on ebay the other day. They do come up, you just have to look.

Previous owner added a lot of mods, including AP branded rear sets. Seems odd to not have done the stand if it known to be such an issue. 

In the meantime, what is issue with the stand? Are there certain things I can do to lower the risk of bike falling over before I get new stand??

yes solenoid and cables are easy 2 nuts for the solenoid and solder 2 wires for the fuses of the +lead to make the soldering easier check out the soldering butt connector dog 78 showed us on the battery posting

I think mine is the original then. How on earth such a design flaw got through to production is beyond me...or even a vehicle recall. 

As for solenoid - soldering is, by my standards, a job for the mechanic. If it’s bolts and nuts I can cope - but anything more involved then I’m stuffed. I don’t think I’ve soldered anything since I made a fuse tester in tech class when I was 14!

Shame really as id like to do more. I gather the sidestand is pretty much a straight swap with a little bit of tinkering. So no need to fiddle with electrics etc.

Lol, posting pics is an art form. I need to look up instructions every time.

The side stand is a straight swap for a Fireblade one. The bike sits much better. It looks from the earlier pic that you've still got the original stand - the replacement ones kick off at more of an angle.

Totally agree with Diablos recommendations earlier. if it doesn't start then the day is ruined. Had mine nearly 9 years now and those 3 items (battery, solenoid and John Walker cables) have kept it firing up every time.

Looks a tidy bike from what I can see from the randomly placed photos....LOL

LOL ridiculous situation with photos I know! Sorry about that

So I’ve had a look on eBay and this listed 

Seems to fit the bill as from 2004-2006 blade. I assume there is no need to switch over the switches? So can literally unbolt the old one and bolt this one on? That would be awesome; as I really don’t want to drill.

Your bike looks really tidy. Obviously given a prep by the dealer but it needs to be right for that to be effective.

Your earlier question, yes your standard looks like the standard UK spec sidestand. I can't comment on the FB stand as I got a US one so not sure what else fits - and works.

as said,side stand then upgrade the starting components.

just upgraded the battery too a lithium one with higher cca and upgraded the starter solenoid to the 150amp myself.

hopefully get round to fitting them both soon as the mot is due feb.
these along with a nice exhaust (which you already have!) 
and a good set of tyres and suspension set up are my 1st mods/upgrades.

then enjoy what is a genuinely beautifull real world bike.
these milles are superb riders bikes with great handling/sound and torque.

personaly im not to interested in upping the power  ect,i love riding/looking at my mille.
ive had faster/newer bikes,but none ive fell for like these aprilias.
enjoy it mate.

I seriously wish I had the stones to do this stuff myself (soldering and all that jazz) but without someone talking me through it and without the kit...I’m reliant on my mechanic. Sadly that means the £30 per hour labour fee or whatever it is 😖

eBay drawing a blank on US Mille stands for now

The stand on your link is not the original side stand. That is one made by a guy who used to be on here called Bubsywoo 

The OEM stand can be okay if the forks are four lines showing but like many on the three bikes I've owned I have replaced the side stand with a US spec one. 

As for the soldering you can use solderless connectors. You crimp them and then heat the connector to shrink the outer plastic to create a seal. I know a Porsche mechanic you builds race cars and they use them as he put it 'most people can't solder well'

i put a vtr firestorm side stand on mine it a straight fit but you need to drill a hole for the switch which takes seconds though i disconnected mine and plugged it
