Hi Folks... Dropped a valve in my engine whilst doing approx 160 mph on the straight at Almeria the damage it caused is unfortunately terminal lol. This happened on day 1 of a 4 day trip, luckily I had my trusty old 04 Gen 2 to fall back on as I had loaned it to one of my mates who was also on the trip as his (uber reliable )Gixer 750 had been playing up before the bikes were picked up from home. As we were in different groups the poor mille got abused 40mins out of every hour we were there and was bullet proof as usual. (Cheers Griff)……..
I am currently on the lookout for a replacement engine for my 11 plate RSV4 APRC factory unfortunately living in bonnie Scotland there are very few dealers or even people owning a V4 up here so any help anyone can give me on sourcing a second hand unit either privately or from a dealer would be greatly appreciated.

Not many used motors around unless you find an accident damaged bike and because of that I would expect competition for them.
Most v4 motors fail in the same way as yours and are toast otherwise you could of maybe robbed bits from another motor with a different failure. |

From what I've read from those in the know on AF1 some motors suffer severe valve guide wear at fairly low mileages. That allows the valve to move off center and the head can strike the edge of the seat rather than sitting into it. That stresses the head and it snaps off. The warning sign is a valve clearance going tight when the others are less so. It's goes tight because the valve is not sitting flush in the seat.
Unfortunately many garages just think it 's out of adjustment and change the shim, not realising why it has gone tight. Later engines are deffo better but not totally immune. |

yeah the head off one of my valves has snapped off on the left hand side on the rear cylinders. Not sure what my next step is if the engine is fun at and I can't get a 2nd hand one

I want to buy a second bike for the track so I can keep the miles off the 05 factory and something to ride whilst building the big Bore , and I fancied something a bit more modern . I did consider the 16/ 17 model Rsv4rf, but I don't feel I could trust it also Aprilia won't always accept liability for these head failures.
I think it's going to be a BMW SR1000 or a the new R1, as I know that the Aprilia got that problem with the V4 I would feel an idiot if I bought one and it let go. I reckon this what I found on eBay would have been up to job and easily as good a the V4. I just don't have the trust and confidence in the V4 as I do for the Rotax engines , Aprilia should have got Rotax to make the V4 as their twin is legendary . It ain't got Aprilia on it but it's got some quality parts and the engine is easily a match for the V4 , but without the worry

Hi BIG UN, I really would be pissed of if I bought a late Aprilia and it blew up, yes the gearboxs are weak but there's always a Nova box . I might go for the R1 like the one above, when you look at the kit on it and the miles it worth that sort of money, the extra new must cost that alone.

can't vouch for the R1 as I haven't been on one but I did have a go on an HP4 albeit only one session and hated it. It felt gutless and vague after the v4 tbh.... top ends mental once your there but if your used to a bit of grunt out the corner it's not got that kind of power delivery... so the shnell panzer is not for me lol.....

So sorry to read this mate sounds like an absolute nightmare as Bigun said you seem ( in text ) to of taken it well all things considered. Good old Gen2 got you out on track though so at least you didn't lose the trip as well as the bike! Good luck on the engine hunt.

Hi Adam , yes it good to be back too. Had enough of all that Facebook , I only activated my account to be able to go on the trackday. Too many idiots and glory hunters on there for me, I thought I would come back to the forum where it all started for me after meeting Redratbike on AF1. The forum is more personal and help and support I have had here is unbeatable, also made some great friends . I have had some health issues with my hips and knees and a few other things, probably the scaffolding done the damage, but so far they say they can't repair the damage to the attachment areas , so I have decided to cash in and find something else to do, and may pay for private health care and get my legs fixed if possible. Yes I am going to buy something like them track beasts and live life like I stole it for the next ten years 😂 while I can still ride. I am waiting for Spoonvalley Racing to come back with a price for the 1127 build. But at least if I got another bike I won't miss out while I am building the big Bore. I had a couple of rides and a trackday in about a year , that won't happen again next year . I just thought quality or quantity , I chose quality of life 😂. Yes so a busy year ahead with hospital appointments every couple of months, but I will be having fun in-between. I hope you are keeping well buddy , hopefully you be able to come to next year's event at Donington. If the 1127 ain't ready I will take something else. It feels like coming home to be here writing on here again 😊✌

Hahaha yeah welcome home buddy
Sorry to hear about the aches and pains mate between you and Rick you would think we would all give up just in case but we cant do that can we???? Sounds like you're going to be having a lot of fun in the coming years aboard one of those missiles! I had decided to retire the ape from track duties and trade up to something purely track biased and keep the factory in one piece so I'm hoping to be on something else buy the time Donny comes around again but we'll see if the usual life costs get in the way as they always seem to. I've seen the 1127 touno on YouTube its absolutely nuts looks like 1098 on viagra bloody crazy will be following that build with keen interest. Id love to tackle that kind of work but its wat out of my league.

Drew what year engines will fit in your bike, only 2011 ?
Or will other fit, there's a 2016 1100 Tuono motor on eBay but in the US ,only got 2k on it. There was a 2011 V4 on eBay , it was a track bike with a Nova gearbox a TTX gp shock virtually new . About 6k and it never sold, it would be worth buying that and breaking it ? I will see if I can find it for you .

I won't be tackling it myself neither Adam, it's going to be shipped to Spoonvalley Racing . There something to do with the crank bearings tolerances, and only the early gen two motors have them bearings, as I didn't know about the bearings , I decided to ask Joakim to do it. The 1103 I would have tackled my self, I don't even know the difference between the bearings, and as it's going to be the last, I didn't want to f**k it up. Plus I want to get some track time in so it's probably for the best and the man is Genius , bored out a RSV4 motor to 1100 with a 5k valve train and now is supercharging it 😂
It looks like you will have something new on track aswell 😂 , that BMW above is ridiculous , that would be too quick for me and would probably end up with worse aches and pain. I can't complain about the rsv as for reliability but it's only done 12K, but I don't want to be somewhere in Europe and something like what happened to Drew happen to the motor. That last link is a nice bike and I was sorely tempted, but they still scare me. I heard that some people are putting bronze valve guides to cure the problem , but although it's a good idea I don't really know if it stop them from dropping the valves . I think I will buy something else as I will always have my RSV. If Rick can do it I have no excuses , yes he's a great motivator 👍

I am sure Amauri on af1 said that all year engines will fit physically but require loom changes if fitting a later motor to an earlier bike and the exhausts were not interchangeable or something like that.

Hi Spoonz , I thought that might be the case, but that rsv4 that didn't sell could be worth buying as a donor bike it has 5k miles on it and the TTX gp shock and loads of other kit on it, it really depends if you have the money to buy it then break it to get the money back. I am surprised that even the later motors are still doing it. But if you still got the warranty I guess you will be ok.
