ive been looking for a new car for a while now. Some of you may remember that I had an old German barge a while back; a gorgeous '96 W140 S500 V8 Merc. It was a proper beast of a car but completely inappropriate and very expensive to keep. I flogged that about a year ago and replaced it with an old Passat which cost me about £250. It was a good, solid and reliable car but it was just a very basic and unmoving motor. For the past couple of months I've been actively researching and viewing other Mercs and I had my heart set on a nearly new E350. Theure all singing, all dancing mile crunching weapons with 250ish bhp standard with plenty of capacity to remap to about 320 and reach high torque figures. The downside is expensive keeping and a high outlay. A decent one in the new shape sets you back around 20k. So I got a bank loan and went to view loads but I was always scared to spend so much dab on a car and be saddled with the debt. I didn't fancy a newish Audi because I'm not taken with their build quality nowadays but I know that the older ones are better so today I went to view a 2008 A4 avant quattro with 100k on the clock. Within 30 mins we'd agreed a price of just over 8k and then sorted the paperwork. The car was over in Cheshire so I came back over the Derbyshire peaks and was grinning the entire time. The car is incredibe from bumper to bumper and is very highly spec'd. The original owner spent over 20k on options. Everything works perfectly but the engine, gearbox and quattro system make it such an involved drive It's got loads of grunt and through 3rd and 4th it just rockets away. So I've ended up being super happy having spent less than half of my budget meaning I can treat myself to a remap and a few other bits and bobs!
Happy days.

At the beginning of this year I parted with my 06 Avant quatro 2.8TDI
It really stuck to the road at silly speeds when throwing it at corners Change the brake fluid regularly or you will end up with a long pedal during "spirited" driving

ive heard that a couple of times actually. The brakes do get a lot of hammer so I'll keep my eye on it. Just been having a look at some reputable mapping companies and the figures for a stage 1 remap look good although you do have to take them with a pinch of salt...
241bhp - > 300bhp (+59) 365 torques - > 435 lb/ft (+66) 300bhp and a quattro set up would do me nicely!

are the Quattro systems pretty reliable?
Toyed with the idea of a Quattro in the past but the complexity put me off in case something was to go wrong and cost a lot to put right. Always loved the Audi

Had my Audi A4 1.9tdi Sport 130 Avant 12 years now, from 72k to my wife just informed me...148k! I only lent it to her as a temporary measure last year ffs. Great car considering I don't keep cars, I usually by them needing work, make them better and sell them but saw this in its mossy green and had to have it.
Once I had this mapped by a pal a couple of hundred miles after purchase, for my first diesel, I was so impressed. Ex Bentley owned, fabric interior which I wanted and it's lighter than leather, nice piano black trim, 5 speed which meant no overdrive type 6th and a lighter transmission, no sunroof, and no weighty AWD set up, so the car drives really very well overall, no slouch, great mile muncher and unlike new cars, it has a great fuel tank capacity, good for up to 850 miles if sensible. Back then it would 'pull' to 140, mad! I can relate to the big Mercedes Benz ownership as I have a CL500 W215 since '09, thirsty yes, but on a run not much worse than my 2005 supercharged Mini, it's just that in the Mini I'm having a hoot, and the Mercedes I'm nursing the gauge! The CL is deceptive, as it looks as heavy as the all steel S class, but CL being Coupe Lightweight (relatively speaking) it has aluminium bonnet, doors, roof, rear quarters, plastic wings, composite boot lid and plastic boot floor, and the inner doors are Magnesium, the only steel being the firewall, floor, and under the rear seat into the rear bulkhead, with 306hp. Who knew haha. It's rarely used, sits for months at a time waiting. Well done preserving your budget. |

Audi make lovely cars but not as reliable or trouble free as poeple may think,i've got a '11 plate Audi TTS and it been driving me nuts, engine warning light on irratic idle looks like it the PCV (pressure control valve) which as gone tits up and creating loads of issues, when it's running there's so much vacuum in the engine you can't pull the oil cap off !! well you can get it off but it's a proper struggle and then the engine dies with no oil cap on, apprarently a common issue on later model Audis it's not an expensive fix (fortunately) so I see a trip down to Wakefield Audi later this week. The real worry is the suspension warning light as just come on also, the TTS spec has 'magnetic dampers' which to me only serve to make the ride choppy and if anything make the car virtually undrivable over bumpy B roads (I don't think they have pot holes in Germany) so I pretty much have never used it and I don't think the light alone is an MOT fail so will probably leave well alone and ignoore the warning light. I think over complication and pointless (expensive) gadgets are a major problem with Audi (and indeed all new cars) self parking, auto brakes, lane departure warning, magnetic bloody suspension etc etc are all un-necessary if people remembered how to drive properly and if the suspension was set up right in the first the friver aids and fancy electronic suspension would be irrelevent, just my ten cents, I hope you enjoy the car and it behaves itself.

the car does have all manner of gadetery including lane assist or whatever its called. Needless to say most of it stays turned off. The car involves you so much that nothing is really necessary aside from seats and a steering wheel 😂
Its going to a rolling road next Wednesday to have a 'blend' map set up which is apparently the perfect mix between tuned power and economy.... Basically it'll be about 300hp and will cost me twice the amount in fuel from that day onwards. Excellent car and the best handling I've ever driven.

What he said! It also helps the manufacturers to keep all maintenance work to themselves and their dealers. Most dash warning lights are now an mot failure so you are often stuck with an unnecessary repair bill. I was speaking to a guy the other week who had just bought one of the new Volvo X40's, nice car (Stupid money but all new cars are). You couldn't start it if the seat belt wasn't fastened so when that sensor fails when you are out in the boonies with no mobile signal you are absolutely stuffed, just madness! Just because you CAN do it doesn't mean you should.

I’ve got an Audi A4 Avant 1.8t remapped to 200 bhp bloody lovely car but the rear diff is knocking and Audi want £4300 to replace it, none of my local transmission specialists say they can repair it! If I could get it repaired I’d be a happy camper.

Is this a common problem or just unusual and possibly high miles?

Not common on those models, I have an 2.5TDI A4 quattro with 160K on it and my previous identical model went 240K with only a wiper linkage failure other than wear items - and original clutch and exhaust! Get the proper full time 4WD though and not any of the variable split type or DSG boxes. |
