There's a new Esso petrol station just opened in a town a few miles from me (in North Yorkshire).
I decided to fill up the bike today and found a tanker refilling the station tanks when I arrived. After refilling the bike I went over to the tanker driver and asked him if he knew whether Esso fuels contained ethanol. Found out he was a bike rider too and knew the problems with ethanol and plastic / nylon tanks. He said that all Esso fuels, including Premium super unleaded contain ethanol, and this was UK wide and not just limited to certain geographical areas. When I got home I decided to check the fuel myself and did the simple test to see if ethanol was present. It was

Hmmm.
I've been emailing them every few months to check the ethanol free status. This email was from the 11th of may:
Good morning Mr. Diablo,
Please be kindly informed that, Esso super unleaded petrol (Synergy Supreme+ Unleaded 97) is ethanol free (except in Devon, Cornwall, the Teesside area and Scotland) and we have no current intention to add ethanol to Synergy Supreme+ in other areas of the UK.
With kind regards,

Teeside was yorkshire before they started meddling ! lol Oil companies dont give a sh*t, if they make a dollar more they will dilute the petrol with anything they can , what is wrong is they dont have to notify what they are doing ! A few years ago a friend and his ferrari were nearly damaged by petrol with diesel in it. Fortunately he stopped after 100 yards, many drove on and wrecked their engines. The petrol company lied all day long about how it happened.

It would be interesting if you chaps who live in other parts of the UK and fill up with Esso Premium super unleaded checked your fuel for ethanol. Really easy to check, just google it and let us know.

I'm sure the ethanol thing is just internet hysteria. Sure it's not ideal, but I don't think it does as much harm as people make out. Maybe it's a different story if the bike is laid up for months at a time..

Usage could be a factor, the problem is that the ethanol content attracts/separates water in the fuel, this water is absorbed by the nylon tank causing it to go soft and lose it's shape. I found out just how much nylon66 will change due to airborne moisture when I modded a Triumph singe sided paddock stand with a sleeve to fit a Duc. This sleeve was a loose running fit when first used, come to take the bike off the stand it it had to be driven out of the hub, once removed it wouldn't go anywhere near going in again until I turned about 0.75mm off the dia. This was all inside a warm, dryish garage by the way,not left outside in the rain Perhaps if the tank is filled and drained on a regular basis the water content will be kept smaller? However if it was just urban hysteria Ducati wouldn't have faced a class law suit in the states and have had to replace many tanks due to distortion and potential fire risks. Aprilia also by the way. Metal tanks are also at risk from this problem although they don't warp, steel rusts unless pre treated and alloy will corrode. Oh for those days past when leaded 5* was cheaply available,it may have been a bit toxic but as a fuel it was far superior. The old paint was also far better for having lead in it as well, just as long as people didn't eat the stuff, now we have to suffer the crap water based modern equivalent. Progress isn't always all it seems |

modern everything is just made to last the warrenty. Its getting worse every year. Look at computers / laptops / tablets if they go wrong its not worth repairing. I had a fire tablet go wrong after 6 months, amazon sent me a new one and told me to throw away the old unworky one. Many cars are like this to, as well as any sh*thonda bike lol. Most of the new fuels and new paints and new legislation is to make the old no longer fixable. Buy new, landfill tomorrow...

I wonder when the masses will wake up to the fact they are nothing more than walking wallets for big business? Look at bikes,More Crap Nonsense comes out and tells you that the new Brand A is 0.5 secs faster than last years model, has improved electronics and comes in a new colour scheme and is the new must have. Result, the pack runs down to the nearest dealer and hands over their pride and joy with a large amount of cash just to be seen with the latest toy, come next week and the crap rag has a new advertising driven theme telling you that brand A is now so yesterday and you need brand B to be one of the cool people Fortunately I'm too cynical ( and poor) to want to play that game any more |

Its quite simply economics mixed with profitability ......do you really think that our concerns as a minority and we are a very small minority in the grand scheme of things will have any impact on when and how much ethanol is contained within petrol or even care that it damages vehicles equipment , I mean what wally would want to run something that's more than a year old and be made of substandard components ? |

Us or the vehicle manufacturers don't have a say in what is put in the fuel, politicians and government scientists do and don't care about the cost to us, just look at the diesel car fiasco, tell us to buy diesels and then when a huge proportion of sales are diesel change there minds.

The problem with ethanol is not only that it warps the resin tank, but the breather hoses inside the tank as well. I have the metal tank gen1 mille, but had to get new hoses installed as the old hose was destroyed. Have been filling up Esso premium super unleaded since. Hope the petrol proof hose I got indeed turns out be that!

I've said before when I go out there's one garage locally that has ethanol free, after that I can only get what's available unless I want to plan my ride around garages that supply it and that's not going to happen unless I only want to ride 50 miles from home.
