Anyone tried running a tea spoon of castrol R in the tank for that nostalgic old racing smell?

I used to use the remainder of my race fuel diluted in my car just so I didn't waste it. However be careful, it can gum up inside the engine and can cause all manner of problems with injectors and blocked oil strainers. Ask me how I know!

Errr, well I suppose I can live with the embarrassment.

I got a blocked strainer on the oil pickup and the result was an engine seizure in the fast (Sorry overtaking) lane of the M6! It had been a little slow to build pressure from cold for a while but never displayed a pressure problem once running. I had asked the dealer to investigate at the previous service two weeks earlier (Even though I suspected what the cause may be) but you can guess their response - nah mate there's no problem. However once they stripped the engine they found what they described as a 'Gooey stuff' blocking the pickup. Now I don't really know what the gooey stuff was but I have a very good idea and as you can imagine, certainly didn't want them to do an analysis. And bear in mind I would probably dilute five litres of premix with a full tank of fuel so the resultant oil ratio was tiny.

Fortunately it was a company car at the time and I left my boss to deal with it whilst I was on holiday.

Not too many of us old gits around to remember R40 I would have thought LOL

I used to run my old car with a healthy hit of R40 in the petrol tank back in the '70's

Quick blip of the throttle and dash round to the exhaust pipe to breathe in the smell Embarrassed

Not quite the same as a grid of classic bikes though

We used to run our Triumph 750 race outfit on the stuff and you're right, it could turn to jelly very quickly even used how it was designed to be.

Ahhh yessss, brings back fond memories, ran many a moto cross bike on good old Castrol R, always had to give the bike a bloody good shake just to mix the fuel and oil together before trying to start them otherwise the oil used to settle in the bottom of the tank and the float bowls and would be a complete nightmare to start. Like a few others have mentioned.  I also used to put a little bit in the tank of whatever two stroke bike I had  at the time just to get that unmistakable smell. If I had some today I'd probably put a small shot in my 1/5 scale rc buggy I have when I take it out, now there's a thought !   Wink

I've just had a thought Lamp

What with all these different types/makes of oil people keep asking opinions on,just think if a manufacturer had the nous to make something that smelt like R, they'd sell a lake of it to all of us chasing the nostalgia kick LOL

My wife has a little side line going in making scented wax candles and other smelly things and asked me the other day what I thought would be a good manly scent to make for male customers. Obviously, my first retort was that men don`t buy scented candles but then, when pressed, came up with Castrol R scent.
