I'm actively seeking a Gen 1 RSV'R' at the moment, as I've mentioned in various posts on here and comments on the Facebook Aprilia sites. A few have come up recently but I've been put off because they haven't had the original service book with them.  One just came on the AP Facebook page in Dublin, looked great, black 2002 R, 18000 miles, 3000 euros (about £2650). I'd have to get it registered in the UK, but it had no manual or service book.

Am I being a fussy tw*t?

I don't think I have had a service book with any bike I have ever bought, never bothered me yet.

I picked up a low mileage 2003 RSV last September that came with the original service book.

It can be done....

I’ve got two I’m considering at the mo. A black radial braked 03R and the above black 02R. Neither have service book but both are in great condition with similar miles. 02R is much cheaper but I’d need to get it delivered from Ireland and then register it over here. Black 03R looks stunning and has Aprilia titanium can but needs a new lower fairing decal and original indicators fitting to get it up to scratch. I think too much is my problem

I have the s/h book and the original manual although it's not alot of good as it's in Italian !! The previous owner had a print out of the English version, IMHO a thick wad of receipts is more important then the service book.

What does a stamped book prove?...that the bike's been worked on by a bike shop you probably wouldn't trust to touch your present pride and joy.
There are owners out there who are more than competent to work and look after their bikes and when they need specialist work, there's AP. You can tell these bikes by checking them over in the right places and talking to the owners.
I think you've made the right choice.

From experience don't buy too far away unless you are really sure or know of the bike / owner. You travel miles and end up emotionally committed and overlook things you otherwise might not.
That said I travelled 150 miles to buy mine

Up until recently I was in the ‘don’t buy too far away’ school, but after searching for a close Mille R has meant I’ve missed out on some great bikes further away. I’m now looking everywhere, there aren’t that many standard looking, well kept gen 1 Rs for sale, especially as I specifically want a black, big valve version. The 03R I’m currently interested in is Surrey, and I’m near Stroud, Glos

They do turn up Wilko, it's a matter of just keep looking. Mine came from Braintree and I live in Glos. Lots of phone calls and photos, before I committed.

Yep, been there, done that.
Flew easy jet up to Edingburgh in my leathers, checked the bike over, handed over the cash, called the insurance company and rode it home in the wet.

I've still got the original service book with my 2002 model though it's not fully stamped up as I get Griff to service it and have never bothered to get it stamped. I've also got both original manuals, one that has an English part and the one that's all foreign but then I've had it from new.

I sold a 919 fireblade to a guy from Cardiff, arranged to pick him up from Glasgow airport, did the deal and he rode it home, was doing it in one stretch if I remember as he was pushed for time, it was throwing it down when he left too.. actually felt worried for him..

He's not a Southerner. Stroud's in the Midlands (north of the M4 see).
And we love to travel.

Dropped into Tamworth yesterday to look at the black 03R Griff has for sale. Very very nice and I was this close to putting down a deposit. However I feel like I need to view the one in Surrey as well or I'd forever be wondering if I made the right decision. I'm off to Surrey Saturday morning to see it.

It went very well and I bought it.  Big smile  Well, put a deposit down anyway. I'll be getting it delivered as soon as he's changed out his personalised reg number and had the original reassigned. 21000 miles, Aprilia titanium race can and chip (plus original), fantastic overall condition, with service history. Been wanting a black 03R for years. Just got a few little bits to do over winter to get it right up to scratch which I'm really looking forward to doing. Happy days Cool  Better book myself on the Donny trackday next July

I used to post up photos by copy and pasting a link from photobucket, I’ve heard this doesn’t work any more - what’s the best technique now?

That's great news buddy, bet you can't wait to get your hands on it Thumbs Up

Equally, we can't wait to see it ha ha LOL

If you're a premium member, you can post pics from your pc with no image hosting. Think it's only 5 or 10 quid.

The only image host I've used apart from Photobucket was Flickr, which seemed ok.

Just to check though, if you click on the big white arrow in the toolbar at the top, when replying or posting, that takes you to the full editor. Click on that and look at the toolbar again -is there a small icon with a green tree there? Click on it if you do have it, that's how to post pics from pc there. Think it's for premium members, but I could be wrong.

I think you should stick the bike under the Xmas tree to keep it warm Wink
Question everything.
