As long as you don’t go in a straight line you’ll be fine

I'd been putting off changing it because I was taking the bike off the road for the winter so it seemed pointless replacing tyres if I was going to be stripping it down, but it was nice Sat so ended up going for one last run before it got SORN'd Sun, only did a 100 or so miles and the cords certainly weren't showing when I left. It seems that the wear rate accelerates the more worn the tyre is, the central part of the tyre is very very thin, when I was removing the wheel I noticed a metallic glint it turned out to be what looked like a staple which had punctured the tyre, so I was lucky to get home. When I remove the tyre I'm going to cut a section out to see exactly how thin but I'd guess it's only a couple of mm. Next time I'll make sure I change the tyre while the thread is still visible.
