Hi all. Seems to be a friendly group over here so thought I would post my find. After losing my bike to a split... and wondering if I would manage to get myself back on two wheels I found her. Being a lover of all things Italian and a fan of the RSV 1000R long before riding I hoped one day to own one.
Then... craigslist. Discovered a poor '04 Grey RSV1000 R Factory sitting un loved in a downtown apartment building for a wonderful price and with encouragement from my new significant other made the deal. Here's how I found her: (pics look better than reality... she was covered in years of neglect) |

TY Kindly all :) Here are a few of the condition found. The carbon was all peeling... tree sap everywhere... had overspray on it???? somehow... but... all the goodies! 4000km which from documentation etc seem to be legit.
From what I can tell its serial number #94 so a very early one. I know the early ones had the signatures on the tank like mine. Anyone have any idea how many left like that? Based on some cursory research from peoples serial numbers it seems maybe only couple hundred. |

In the picture it looks like your oil level has been filled / topped up when cold (Assuming that the bike has not just been switched off just before you took the photo )

Hello and welcome to THE forum buddy
A great bike. I'm sure you'll make it pretty again. Good job on the carbon bits I noticed on the other thread. It's all those little things that make all the difference. Keep it up mate, it helps to have an understanding partner who lets you have a mistress |

Good eye Zax. I noticed that as well. I didn't top it up and it was cold... Has not happened since so not sure what it was on about that day :)
First job was documenting the condition... then pulled it apart and to figure out the good bits and what needed work. There are two things I really like. 1, finding something someone didn't appreciate as the ought to, 2, taking that thing and turning it back into awesome. Oh... and 3... it has to be Italian ;) Needed: Bike needed 2 starts to get running properly. First start had a dash warning and would not rev past 4k or so. Went in read the codes and found a faulty oil pressure sensor. Replaced, warning gone, no errors, and bike starts and runs first time now. Coolant needed topping mmm a deep deep clean... went at it with gunk remover and a tooth brush for the first layer of crap. Found: Gilles Rearsets Gilles Chain adjusters 520 Conversion 15/42 180 rear tire PC3 with custom map Samco hoses Evo airbox mod Pazzo shorty levers Brown connector reliminated Gel soft seat AF1 lowering link a box full of all the original parts like rearsets, chain and gears, pillion seat... and the factory black exhaust hangers to remove the passenger :) Complete bike manual... i mean binders and binders of it. |

So... the story as told to me is as follows.
First owner lived in norther Alberta worked in the oil sands and had a bunch of money. Bought the bike and did all of the upgrades/changes when the bike was new. He intended to use it as a part track/road toy apparently. Anyway... the roads are terrible up north and he simply never rode it. In fact... he put on 190 some kms over the course of his ownership of 12yrs. Second owner was approached by the original owner about trading his Honda Rune for the Ape. He thought it would be a fun toy and it was basically new and he didnt really like the Honda anyway so they traded. Over the course of second owners ownership rode the bike 3600kms and moved to Kelowna BC. Left the bike outside for a few months (explains the tree sap and pine needles...) then moved to Vancouver and put it in his apartment building along with a few other bikes he had. anyway.... second owner got an itch for a boat... and needed 5k to buy it... so he put the bike up for sale on craigslist for 5k. I freaked out when i saw it because I knew exactly what it was... however life changed and my job was in peril but... my girlfriend insisted on me contacting him and doing what ever it took to get the bike. She swore after I had to let my last one go that I would have another bike one day :) ps... shes amazing. Messaged the second owner... and he would not wait til the next day for me to come and view... and had a guy come that night. Thankfully... the guy did not fit the bike... i told him it was sold to me and drove down the next morning to view / ride it home. Zero way i was gonna let it go. When I saw it I was both dismayed and excited. Clearly it was in need of love and attention from a dedicated meticulous owner (me ;) ) and yet it had some exciting things I was not expecting. Sure the carbon was all peeling... and the bike had a starting issue... and the battery mostly flat... but I could see the potential. So... terrified and over the moon paid and rode it home that morning. My first "super" bike and definitely my first really "fast" bike. But not my first Italian (ducati) or my first twin. It has rained here for like 3 months... and the day i went to see it was the only sunny day in the month. Got her home... took before pictures to remember how I found it... and literally ripped it apart that afternoon to see what I was dealing with. The next day the second owner dropped me off a box of all the takeoff parts, manuals, and books. Every time i took a panel off and dug deeper I was met with more and more good news despite the layer of dust/dirt etc. Clearly when you take into consideration all of the parts/mods it really was setup to be a track weapon. In fact... upon opening the box of spares I even found the original flywheel... yes this one has been lightened. So its been completely done up at what would be great expense but then left unused. Sometimes I love rich bastards ;) Aprilias in this part of the world are underappreciated. But... to me they represent all the wonderfulness of Italian design prowess and exotic without being extravagant. An RSV 1000 R was my dream bike long before I ever started riding (38yrs old when I started) and I never expected to find or own a Factory... let alone a rare early model. So there you go. My bike story... as to how she came to be mine... long form. Sorry if its too wordy... but for me bikes have stories. The stories make them even better and more appreciated. |

Great story.....must say I've owned plenty of bikes over the years, but I can't see me parting with my ape,
Took her out Saturday morning for the first time this year for what was going to be a quick spin, ended up phoning the miss's "sorry love can't make it for shopping, see you tea time" Cracking bikes and despite the back break issue I've never had a problem. |

This is brilliant.
Sounds like you and the bike were meant for each other! You've unearthed some pleasant surprises along the way. Great for you to know the complete history of your bike like that |

Sounds like you got a bargain And half the fun with a bike like that is stripping it and doing a deep clean
I think you'll be very happy when you get it all back together,it sounds like that bike was always meant for you to own it. And a belated welcome to our forum as well |

Ty all kindly. The project is extremely fun. I admit. ;) Its kind of like bonding. The project ties you together in a way. More satisfying I think.
Even if it is just cleaning up yrs of gunk on a sprocket and carrier.

And shes done. All that's left (for now ;)) is some missing hardware that's on its way. 5 rides under my belt... I believe you Brits say: I'm pretty chuffed at the outcome.
(PS... keep an eye out for a set of Factory side fairings... mine lost the rear bottom section on its journey and one day I might like to put that right. Or carbon ones and factory decal them? oh man... it begins.)

Very good job!
I have one observation only. The forks seems to extend a lot more than usual, above the top yoke. The highest i have seen is 4 notches above the yoke Maybe you must fix that, because effects the handling of the bike |

Cheers. It has a lowering link in the bike. With the link you can have up to a 30-35mm of top of the forks through. Min has 23mm which is within spec with the link.
Appreciate the observations though.
