As some of you guys know I already make carbon fuel tanks.I have been asked a number of times about gen 1 and gen 2 tanks. Well I now have a gen 2 tank available to me to make a mould. So now looking for definite interest and I am taking names only at the moment. I need 10 to make it viable and based on the Falco tank size they would be £950.00 plus postage each. That price will not go down if I get more names or go up if there is more work than I hoped for. So let me know if anyone is interested.

OK sorry guys not been on recently... I have possibly an option on a Gen 2 tank to copy that is a good one and would be a start. It would be about 4 months before I get a mould made if this happens. Partly due to work I have lined up now.

So as this tank is a good one and I have possibly got a deal with the mould maker. I will take names only for this Gen 2 tank. I need to get names together to be sure I can cover the cost of the moulds and materials.

Price will be £950.00 plus shipping.

THIS IS FOR NAMES ONLY, NOT DEPOSITS OR PAYMENT UP FRONT.

Hi Morepower,

Is this a repeat post as I believe you were previously collecting names for a Gen 2 tank in whiuch case you have mine already.

Is there any update as to where you are on the required 10 names?

I need to go back and check numbers.. I am at about 3 or 4 for the Gen 2 at the moment. I think I can get away with 6 names as the tank could be a very good one and need very little work...

So there is (POSSIBLY)
Fugly
Nooj
426hemi
Crowman

Possibly one more not on the forum too..

It is close... Just need to confirm and get 2 more who are definitely going to have one.

Oh well... The cost of making a mould from a plastic tank is double making one from a steel or composite one. So as I said if I get 10 who want a Gen 1 I would do it.. Its just getting to the break even point. If I only make 10 tanks I have a mould and have covered costs only. It only becomes profitable once  you get to 11+.

The Gen 2 I have been offered is a composite one. I had the opportunity to buy ALL of the fuel tank moulds that QB Carbon had and any masters. But there was almost nothing I could use there apart from about 3 things. So having a composite Gen 2 has lowered the bar quite a bit and may make it easier to look at a Gen 1 if I get to do a few extra Gen 2's.

That is the unknown. The Brand new Falco tank had to have a LOT of sanding on the underside to get rid of ripples and negative draft issues. The top could have marks too simply from the process. BUT the biggest issue after now having done several plastic tanks is the tank really needs to be filled with something to make it solid and not crush when it is in a vacuum.

I completely understand that it's business and you have to go for the largest number in a shrinking market with aprilias , not many people are prepared to spend this kind of money on an older bike, just a problem that I am a carbon tart😍

No shame in that..

The RS250 is also an older bike but having made about 16 tanks for that bike over the past 2 years and the Falco too which was never a bike I expected to make anything carbon for it is not that much of a surprise that even older bikes will have new carbon parts fitted to them. Doing 10 Falco tanks was the biggest shock to be honest.. So who knows. The problem is needing a perfect Gen 1 tank to copy as they are all now starting to swell to some degree and would be a bit of a risk when you allow for Aprilia's engineering tolerances on the rest of the bike.

Seen the new tanks. But at between £800 and £900 for a new tank plus the cost of the mould at about £2500 it brings the cost up to about £3500 when you allow for any extra work too.  With about £600 in material  for each carbon tank sold for £950.00 each if they are sold PLUS  £100 for lacquer.(based on 245gr per sq/m costing me £65.00 and the tank weighing about 2.2KG).  There is £350.00 left to pay for adhesive, sealer, bagging consumables and electricity for the oven at 48 hours in the oven.  It would give less than £300 per tank "profit" per tank so 12 tanks would only cover costs and no wages from any of those tanks. At 2 weeks , if I am lucky, to make each one that is 24 weeks or almost 6 months with no wage to simply cover the cost of a mould.

That is why I always try and cover 10 sales with a tank that is good but was either supplied to me or was cheap. Then I can at least make a little money per tank even if it is only about £50.00 as I know after those are done I will make some profit and the mould is paid for.

If you need a 2000 tank you can have my spare, it hasn't been on a bike for years and I'm not to bothered about it getting wrecked if it means more carbon👍

Ok guys.. I have done some more work and been to see a few people about getting moulds made a little cheaper (more work for me though) and if the tanks are priced at £950.00 plus shipping (un-lacquered) I could do it with 6 names. I have had a few let me down with lacquer and the time it takes me to do it would almost double the time to make a tank. So found a company who will do a great job for £250.00 which is not too bad when you look at the cost to have a good paint job.

I have a Gen 2 tank here so if I can get names (NO DEPOSITS UNTIL IT IS 100% SORTED) from those who are 100% I will get the moulds started. More names would be good but 6 will just cover getting the moulds paid for and the cost of the materials for those first 6 tanks. After those are made I can start to put some food on the table.. lol..

I am still looking at getting the pattern tank ready for being moulded but it is looking like I will have to put it on hold for other things. I do love making tanks but I have to be realistic on if there will be enough sales to make it worth while.

I will keep you guys updated with progress on the stuff I can do up to the point it would start to be an investment. If I dont have the numbers I will just have to wait..
